Summer Camp….full of happy times, swimming, learning, sports,
and cool arts and crafts. You think everything is going along fine, and the children are having a great time. Then, you see the first scratch, and the parents are being called…
“Please pick up your child early and take him/her home because of head lice”.
Head lice?!?
Was the child lice free when they arrived? Or was he already infected? Or does another child have head lice and does not know it? Of course, the child is generally clean, with good hygiene. That has nothing to do with head lice. During the school year, parents and nurses are careful to talk to children about preventing head lice, and how to avoid an infestation.
But what about in the summer time?
Head lice are a fact of life anytime you have large groups of kids in close quarters, and it has nothing to do with how well run the camp might be. In the midst of all the swimming, sports,
crafts and games, a child might be exposed to head lice and not even know it.
Preventing Head Lice at Summer Camp!
Head lice thrive in the warm, close conditions of summer.
Sharing towels, swapping helmets, or snuggling on pillows can all lead to a lice infestation. And it’s important to remind the kids not to share combs, brushes, towels and hats.
Lice prevention is the key to avoiding an outbreak.
